Diffusion Lab free essay sample
In this experiment, you will Use a Conductivity Probe to measure the ionic concentration of various solutions. Study the effect of concentration gradients on the rate of diffusion. Determine if the diffusion rate for a molecule is affected by the presence of a second molecule. BACKGROUND Diffusion is a process that allows ions or molecules to move from where they are more concentrated to where they are less concentrated. This process accounts for the movement of many small molecules across a cell membrane. Diffusion allows cells to acquire food and exchange waste products. Oxygen, for instance, might diffuse in pond water for use by fish and other aquatic animals. When animals use oxygen, more oxygen will diffuse to replace it from the neighboring environment. Waste products released by aquatic animals are diluted by diffusion and dispersed throughout the pond. Questions: It is important to consider how the rate of diffusion of particles may be affected or altered. Diffusion may be affected by how steep the concentration gradient is. The direction that a diffusing molecule or ion might travel is random. While the particles are diffusing, is there a net movement from where they are concentrated to where they are less concentrated? Yes particles diffuse from higher concentration to lower concentration Diffusion may be affected by other different, neighboring particles. For instance, if oxygen diffuses towards a single-celled pond organism at a certain rate, will that rate be altered by the presence of another type of molecule? Would the presence of other molecules block or enhance the diffusion of a molecule? Would the moleculeââ¬â¢s rate be independent of particles that do not alter the concentration gradient? Yes the diffusion would be effected because the particles could block the diffusion of the oxygen. The rate isnââ¬â¢t independent of the other molecules because the presence of other molecules may slow the rate of diffusion. One way to measure the rate of diffusion of ions is to monitor their concentration in solution over a period of time. Since ions are electrically charged, water solutions containing ions will conduct electricity. A Conductivity Probe measures the concentration of ions in a solution, but not the concentration of electrically neutral molecules. Salts, such as sodium chloride, produce ions when they dissolve in water. If you place a salt solution inside a selectively permeable membrane such as dialysis tubing, the salt ions can diffuse out of the tubing and into the surrounding water. MATERIALS LabQuest LabQuest App Vernier Conductivity Probe three 18 ? 150 mm test tubes with rack 1%, 5%, and 10% salt water 400 mL beaker ring stand and utility clamp dialysis tubing, 2. 5 cm ? 12 cm scissors dropper pipet or Beral pipet stirring rod dental floss or clamp ABSTRACT In this experiment we tested the effect of salt concentration on the rate of diffusion. We made a model cell using dialysis tubing containing different salt solutions; 1%, 5%, and 10%. Each tube was tied off and placed in a container (not at the same time) with distilled water, and with a LabQuest, the rate of diffusion was measured. We predicted the higher the percentage of salt, the faster the ââ¬Å"cellâ⬠would diffuse; and we found our predictions to be correct. The data showed that the 10% solution diffused the fastest then the 5% then the 1%. PROCEDURE 1. Set up the utility clamp, and ring stand as shown in Figure 1. 2. Set the selector switch on the side of the Conductivity Probe to the 0ââ¬â2000 à µS/cm range. Connect the Conductivity Probe to LabQuest and choose New from the File menu. If you have an older sensor that does not auto-ID, manually set up the sensor. 3. On the Meter screen, tap Rate. Change the data-collection rate to 0. 2 samples/second and the data-collection length to 60 seconds. 4. Test whether different concentration gradients affect the rate of diffusion. To do this, three solutions of differing salt concentrations (1%, 5%, and 10%) will be placed in distilled water. Each salt solution will be placed in a dialysis tube and allowed to diffuse into the surrounding water. When salt diffuses, the conductivity of the water in the beaker will increase. 5. In Table 1, predict what you believe will happen in this set of experiments. How will the rate of diffusion change when a 10% salt solution is placed in contact with pure water compared to when a 1% salt solution is placed in contact with pure water? 6. Prepare the dialysis tubing. Obtain a wet dialysis tube and a dialysis tube clamp or a short length of dental floss. Using the clamp or floss, tie one end of the tube closed about 1 cm from the end, as in Figure 2. 7. Place a 1% salt solution into a section of dialysis tubing. To do this, a. Obtain about 15 mL of a 1% salt water solution in a test tube. b. Using a funnel or Beral pipet, transfer about 10 mL of the 1% salt water into the dialysis tube, as in Figure 2. Note: To open the tube, you may need to rub the tubing between your fingers. c. Tie off the top of the dialysis tube with a clamp or a new length of dental floss. Try not to allow any air into the dialysis tube. The tube should be very firm after it is tied or clamped. Trim off any excess dental floss extending more than 1 cm from either knot. d. Wash the outside of the tubing with tap water thoroughly, so that there is no salt water adhering to the tubing. 8. Place 300 mL of distilled water into a 400 mL beaker. Secure the Conductivity Probe with the utility clamp in the water filled beaker as shown in Figure 1. 9. Place the dialysis tube into the water. Be sure the tubing is submerged completely under the water. Important: Position the Conductivity Probe and dialysis tubing the same distance apart in eachà trial. 10. After stirring the solution for 15 seconds, start data collection. Stir the solution slowly and continuously throughout the one-minute data collection period. 11. Data collection will stop after 60 seconds. Analyze the graph to determine the rate of diffusion for the curve of conductivity vs. time: a. Examine the graph and identify the most linear region. b. Tap and drag you r stylus across the most linear region to select these data points. c. Choose Curve Fit from the Analyze menu. Select Linear as the Fit Equation. d. Record the slope, m, as the rate of diffusion in (à µS/cm/s) in Table 2. Select OK. 12. Remove one of the clamps. If the dialysis tubing is tied off with floss, use a pair of scissors and carefully cut one of the dental floss knots and discard the floss. If you accidentally make a cut in the tubing, replace it. 13. Empty all of the liquid out of the dialysis tube. Squeeze the excess liquid out with your fingers. 14. Rinse the Conductivity Probe with distilled water. 15. Store the data from the first run by tapping the File Cabinet icon. 16. Obtain 15 mL of a 5% salt solution in a test tube. Repeat Steps 7ââ¬â15, substituting this 5% salt solution for the 1% solution. 17. Obtain 15 mL of a 10% salt solution in a test tube. Repeat Steps 7ââ¬â15, substituting this 10% salt solution for the 1% solution. DATA/RESULTS Table 1 Prediction Conclusion The 10% solution will diffuse the fastest because there is less water in the solution than the other solutions, and the 1% solution will diffuse the slowest. The higher the percentage of the solution the faster it diffused. Therefore our prediction was right, the 10% diffused the fastest and the 1% the slowest. Table 2: Summary of Data Salt concentration (%) Rate of Diffusion (à µS/cm/s) 1 1. 6624 5 3. 4205 10 5. 4700à CONCLUSION 1. From Table 2, I can conclude that as the salt concentration increases the rate of diffusion increases. 2. My conclusion was the same as my prediction, so my prediction was correct. 3. The rate of diffusion for the 10% solution was (3. 29/1) about 3. 29 the rate of the 1% salt solution. The rate of diffusion for the 5% solution was (2. 05/1) about 2. 05 the rate of the 1% sa lt solution. 4. The rate of diffusion of a 3% salt solution, according to our graph, would be about 2. 5à µS/cm/s 5. Temperature, size of particles, charge of molecules are other variables that could be tested.

Poem Analysis The Little Boy Lost vs. The Little Girl Lost Essay Example
Poem Analysis: The Little Boy Lost vs. The Little Girl Lost Paper A belief of envisioning a future to seek your creator is a task many people, young or old, continue to accomplish today. William Blakeââ¬â¢s two poems from Songs of Experience: ââ¬Å"The Little Boy à Lostâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Little Girl Lostâ⬠recognizes two children of different genders living through a time of need. The narrator in these two poems lecture through an era of mixed emotions and opinions the little boy and girl witnessed. The setting of ââ¬Å"The Little Boy Lostâ⬠takes place in a location with a community of people, and ââ¬Å"The Little Girl Lostâ⬠is portrayed in the wilderness alone. In addition, his poems feature a child as the inquiring human spirit. The two children in Blakeââ¬â¢s poems reveal similar beliefs involving their creator; however, the children are looked upon differently from their surrounding environment and they are each in a setting where their actions determine their passing of life. In both poems Blake expresses each narrator viewing a similar imagination of their inner-soul, which in the end leads to their passing of life. Each poem opens with symbolizing their communication toward their creator. The narrator of the little boy believes in titling his inventor as ââ¬Å"Fatherâ⬠(line 5) and for Lyca (the little girl); ââ¬Å"her makerâ⬠(6). First, the boy questionably asks his Father how he could love something ââ¬Å"greater than itselfâ⬠(4). Believing to recognize that love is at first selfish, that no one seems capable of loving another more than himself. In a different opinion Lyca initiates to ââ¬Å"arise and seekâ⬠(5) for her maker. Showing, without question, she trusts every moment of her life in her creators plans. The narrator interprets Lyca wandering into the wild as it becomes a ââ¬Å"gardenâ⬠(8). Illustrating positive hints are taking place in her belief. The boy continues to vent that he can only love his Father like a bird that ââ¬Å"picks up crumbs around the doorâ⬠(8). He is overheard by a ââ¬Å"Priestâ⬠(9) in his community who judges his innocent suspicion in a negative way. The Priest stands him on an altar in front of their community and bounds him with iron chains as the Priest explains to their people the boy is a ââ¬Å"fiendâ⬠(14); a dastardly person or evil spirit. Therefore, Lyca settles down harmlessly underneath a tree, falling asleep, as her ââ¬Å"frowningâ⬠(29) night appeared. The actions observed between the boy and Lyca is followed with an unfairly ending from the judgements of their ambience. The stainless boy is punished from the opinion of the Priest, telling their community he is not to judge their most holy ââ¬Å"Mysteryâ⬠(16). His people chained him to the altar and burned him away as his ââ¬Å"weeping parents wept in vainâ⬠(18). In this event Blake implies a horrific scene of an innocent and knowledgeable boy for testing his belief. However, as Lyca has fallen asleep she mentally explores into a positive paradise. Surrounded by the ââ¬Å"beasts of preyâ⬠(34), a lion and lioness examine her to be some form of goddess or purity. Without harm, the lion (symbolizing her maker) disrobes Lyca and takes her back to their cave to sleep. This also symbolizes her creator removing her soul from her material body peacefully in death. Futhermore, Blake indicates a different setting behind each child that aids them to their passing of life. The boy seems to be in a small town where everyone was raised with the same impression of their holy Father. The boy who was caught questioning his Father was punished for reasoning he did not understand. The community ââ¬Å"burnââ¬â¢d him in a holy place, / Where many had been burnââ¬â¢d beforeâ⬠(21-22). This resembles the Priest trying to save him from the wrong acceptance and was helping the boy by burning him in a holy place, which the community believed was the right thing to do. Lyca is surrounded by the ââ¬Å"desart wildâ⬠(7) by herself with no one near to harm her. Faithful Lyca lays asleep against a peaceful tree in the wilderness with the lion; a king, trampling upon her without being alarmed to bring her back to his ââ¬Å"caveâ⬠(52) where she rest in peace. The two poems have shown many meanings and imagination on trusting your beliefs. Reading and analyzing over these poems have made me think more about my understandings and the trust I respect myself to feel toward my creator. Blake mentions these two poems with children of different gender and having strong assumptions on their interactions with their creator. Furthermore, nourishes the idea of the children being judged by their surroundings and making the setting very important from the reader to the character in the poem. In my belief these two poems have taught me more about faith and the actions that could happen at any point in time.

Free sample - NASA Skylab Investigation. translation missing
NASA Skylab Investigation. NASA Skylab InvestigationAbstract Since the human being reseeded in the international space station, there have been numerous researches involving microgravity of the universe. This kind of research could not be successful without the assistance of American first space station, that is, the Skylab. This paper will widely focus on the investigation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Skylab. It will attempt to focus on NASA investigation on the initial flight anomalies of the Skylab which occurred on May 14, 1973. The research will base on; how it happened, why it happened and how to reduce any form of possible failures. Additionally, the paper will uncover the individuals responsible for the fault and assess whether the situation was handled correctly or incorrectly. Introduction According to Feldman (26), Skylab was launched into the world orbit by a Saturn versus rocket on the 14th may 1973. On this day an anomaly occurred which lead to complete loss in the meteoroid shield that surrounded the orbital workshop. It is because of this anomaly that various crews visited Skylab where their come back was through an Apollo aircraft. The main objective of the Skylab was to prove that human beings could also live and survive in the outer space for long durations of time. It is evident that Skylab has continued to serve as the greatest microgravity lab, solar observatory of its time, medical lab, an earth investigation object and most essentially a home far a way from home. Since the implementation of the Skylab investigation, it is evident that there have been creations of new technologies, for instance special showers, exercising equipments, kitchen facilities and sleeping bags which were designed so as to fit in microgravity. The success geared to this experiment was based on the ability of different crews overcoming challenges during their stay in space (Shayler, 224). What is the NASA Skylab? Zimmerman (78) describes Skylab as the first United State space station and the second kind of space station to have been visited by human beings. The NASA which stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration is the only organization that has been involved in the launching of this space station. The one hundred ton space station existed in the world orbit from the year 1973 to 1979 and it had been visited by three different crews in these two years. NASA through Skylab has greatly focused on ensuring that it tries to understand the earth through clearly observing the systems revolving within it. Through its constant explorations on the solar system it has been able to advance on new robotics missions that have seen the growth of new horizon in the class of researches involving the earth (NASA, 2). Based on the background associated to this space station, its origin has been difficult to point out due to the fact that there have been several proposals that the NASA had floated before engaging in the launching of Skylab (NASA, 3).à There have been numerous studies carried out by the NASA organization so as to find the ultimate platform that will be effective for the Skylab. What was the possible cause and result of the flight anomaly? Investigation indicated that the possible cause of anomaly in the flight was due to the fact that the meteoroid shield broke up because the aerodynamic loads had not been accounted for in the design of the flight. The ties that normally secure the solar system within the workshop were broken down as a result of the breaking up of the meteoroid shield.à From this whole effect there was significant loss of the solar system that only took a matter of ten minutes (Wade, 425). It is very evident that lack of professionalism widely contributed to the anomalies within the flight. This is based on the fact that there was no communication among the structural design, manufacturing personnel and aerodynamics. This lack of communication greatly contributed to deficiencies in the designs of the flight meteoroid shield.à Failure of communication toward the flight project highly attributed to the absence of sound techniques over a certain period of time. Of the various stated reasons for the failures of the meteoroid, the most significant identified reason was that of interior pressurization of the flight auxiliary tunnel which caused meteoroid to shield away form the casing of the workshop.à The pressurization within the supplementary tunnel was observed due to the existence of various openings in the astern part of the tunnel (Skylab space station, 210). What are the possible applicable corrective actions towards this flight anomaly? It is important that if back up OWS or analogous spacecraft is to be flown in the near future corrective action should be undertaken. For instance, it could be helpful if the meteoroid was done away with and significantly replaced through the coating of the OWS (orbital workshop) to ensure that there is effective thermal control. Additionally, it is important that protection remain a fundamental factor which will ensure that the board remains attracted to the concept of fixing a non deployable shield (Zimmerman, 80). Hoffman (215) observes that in order to ensure that there is reduction of separation failures such as those of second separation stage, it is important that there are shaped linearly. It is with accordance that structural systems are associated to other mechanisms, components or equipments so as to ensure that a piece of structure does not solely depend on the structure organization. Complex and multi ââ¬âdisciplinary systems should have a designate project engineer whose mandateà will be to ensure that all aspects involving analysis, fabrication, assembly, design and test of the flight are properly observed and undertaken. Corrective measures so as to avoid future predicaments as the ones in flight anomaly are first to ensure that there should be effective management systems to be used within the Skylab workshop.à These overall management systems should be fully operational within the workshop so as to avoid conflicts or inconsistencies as observed in the flight anomaly (Kraft, 127). It is very important that there is significant cross fertilizations between broadened experienced engineers so as to assist in the analysis on the initial flight anomalies. How can we reduce or do away with possibility of failure? As stated in the program objectives that is; to conduct effective research on certain earth resources. It is very evident that effective research is carried out so as to understand what can be done so as to avoid anomalies which often result due to lack of knowledge by the concerned engineers (Suszkowski, 230). It is essential that one effectively studies the effects which are normally associated to weightlessness on living objects such as human beings. It is very evident that Skylab tries to utilize man as an engineer and as individual who is concerned in the research. By so doing it ensures that it provides an equal opportunity or chance in the assessment of one potential capability for prospect space missions (Thomas, 12). Cross fertilization between the different bridges of engineers is important since there is exchange of ideas which are likely to reduce possible failures. Ideas can range from those involving the design of the flight, operations within the flight and analysis that will widely study the flight (Johnson, 25). Another crucial step is that of ensuring all involved engineers are familiarized with the actual hardware especially the one that will ensure that there is productive usage of the flight data. It is good when one is able to establish a chief engineer who will be able to spend ample time in the restrained integration of all the elements described within the flight system. Summary and recommendation From the discussion above it can be strongly affirmed that the anomalies within the flight that occurred on 14th may 1973 was widely attributed by the negligence of several individuals. Before embarking on such an important mission it is very important that one assembles all the required elements that will ensure that the whole project becomes a success. Success is achieved through ensuring concerned individuals are able to accept to be accountable should there be any problem that might a raise (Lindsay, 30). As part of recommendation, it is very essential that a simple and straight forward solution toward these problems is designed so as to minimize incidences like this repeating in the near future. For instance, it is noted that meteoroid flux should be lower as compared to the ones indicated in the calculations. It is very essential that new analyses are incorporated so that maximum protection is achieved. It is good that there is an establishment of a bond between additional metal layer and the OWS wall so as to prevent handling the problem as that involving statistics. This can be achieved through ensuring that the entire covering of OWS is not covered (Kraft, 126). It is essential researchers should further their studies on the effects normally associated with weightlessness of living objects such as human beings. It is very evident that Skylab tries to utilize man as an engineer and as individual who is concerned in the research. By so doing it ensures that it provides an equal opportunity or chance in the assessment of one potential capability for prospect space missions. Feldman, Heather. Use of coconut oil as a renewable resource in 2050 Research Proposal - 1
Use of coconut oil as a renewable resource in 2050 - Research Proposal Example The fuel triggers environmental effluence that leads to universal heating (Natural Resources Defense Council, 2005). Given the effect, the world is now moving towards the use of renewable energy and the coconut oil is emerging as a possible source. The negative effect of the petroleum oil has made policy makers and environmentalists to research on renewable fuels that is environmental friendly. Among the possible source of fuel that can be put in place by 2050 is the coconut fuel. According to Alamu and his fellow scholars, the fuel is growing in popularity and scientists are working on a research that foresee the extensive use of the oil (Alamu, Dehinbo, & Sulaiman, 2010). Countries that would benefit from the fuel will be more than the current countries that produce the petroleum fuel. Every country in the coastal region can benefit from the product. The notion is that the coconut fruit grows widely in the coastal region, and a healthy tree can produce up to 120 fruits per annum (Alamu, Dehinbo, & Sulaiman, 2010). The fuel produced from the fruit can be used to power a diesel engine and therefore become a direct adjunct to diesel (Saxena, 2014). The productivity of the fuel is increasing as the stakeholders realise the impor tance of the fuel. The south pacific region is one of the areas that has acknowledged the importance of the fuel (Namakin, 2007). In this region, industries are adopting the use of the green fuel. The production of the fruit has been heightened to reduce the cost associated with the high demand of the product. The countries in this area are using the coconut fuel to produce electrical energy according to the FAO report (FAO, n.d.). Since the petroleum oil is cannot be replenished back, the long-run cost will be high. The high cost usually makes most of the countries to spend a lot on the oil. The cost incurred in importing fossil fuel have been cut, therefore, saving on

College degree Essay Example for Free
College degree Essay The quest for college degree has brought us to here HCC, because there was no real fulfillment in our various jobs. The benefits from having a college education are manifold and range from jobs satisfaction, higher earning potential, and healthier life style choices. With the advances in technology, many of todays jobs now require more than a high school education or trade skills. Success in the workforce is increasingly defined by the ability to think critically, manipulate a computer, and to work collaboratively in a teaming environment. Todays college education develops these abilities, providing individuals with invaluable business and personal skills and knowledge, as well as opening the door to better career opportunities and increased earning power. Having a college degree is linked to higher pay. People with a higher level of education are more satisfied in their jobs than people who only have a high school diploma. For example, in 2012 the median of earnings for young adults with a bachelors degree was $46,900, while the median was $22,900 for those without a high school credential and $30,000 for those with a high school credential. In other words, young adults with a bachelors degree earned more than twice as much as those without a high school credential (105 percent more) and 57 percent more than young adult high school completers. (National Center for Education Statistics website). One of the biggest arguments against a college education is not being able to go work when you turn eighteen. Many people believe that this will cause them to fall behind and not be able save up enough money. A college education will let you skip the line and start working with better jobs, in better places, with better conditions, and on top of that, the unemployment rates for high school graduates have increased to 8. 1% in the last year (Value of a Degree). The bottom line is that better jobs come from a better education. College education will help in making good choice and have a healthier life style. Apparently those with a college education are more likely to live healthier lifestyles, with fewer incidences of smoking and obesity. The gap between smoking rates of those with high school diplomas and those with four-year degrees has risen from 2 percentage points in 1962 to 17 points in 2012. College-educated adults of all ages, and their children, are also less likely to be obese. In addition, mothers with higher levels of education spend more time with their children, regardless of whether they are employed or not (Top Universities). Also in the other hand, according to Malcom X Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. The Luck of education is a serious problem today. Some effects include illiteracy and increased drop rate, this is also leads to have a trouble finding work. It is difficult to see the exact value of your education in the beginning. However, finishing high school is an asset that everyone with the opportunity should take full advantage of. Just finishing high school opens up some doors, but not many. On the contrary, not going to school can result in higher unemployment and therefore a means for extra burden on the society. You can see from the chart that there is a dramatic difference between what a person will be paid with a diploma and as a college graduate. According to the chart a college graduate can bring home nearly fifty-percent more than a person with a high school diploma. Higher education opens up opportunities for people. It gives student the experience and the confidence that they will be able to use in many life situations. Attending college gives students opportunities to express themselves and to learn about other people and their ideas. Although college isnt for everyone, everyone should at least give it a try. By going to college you learn to become independent, you go into the race for bigger, safer, better jobs, and you make more money on the other side. If you are given the opportunity to go to college, you should take advantage of it. You might even find out that you like it. The college experience is both academic and practical. College gives us a great opportunity to grow intellectually and gives us a chance to mature.

The Tunnel Essay -- Personal Narrative Writing
The Tunnel My unforgettable senior football season was coming to a close. The whole team knew that this was the last game of football we would ever play together. After this game, it would never be the same. I had been waiting my whole life to experience what I was about to face in the next few hours. To me, and to the rest of my hometown, high school football isnââ¬â¢t just a game; it is a lifelong passion. I grew up watching my role models play the same game I was about to play where the football-frenzied town of Mahnomen won four state championships in a row. Since the seventh grade, my team was expected to make it to the state play-offs our senior year, and now we were playing for the state tittle. We didnââ¬â¢t have anybody extremely fast, strong, or even smart on our team. In fact, no senior would go on to participate in college football. We were just a few guys that would never give up no matter what the circumstances. Those guys were my team, like I was the one leading them all into a battle field, even though that was the feeling of half the other guys. My team had been nicknamed ââ¬Å"The Cardiac Kidsâ⬠because of our ability to pull out a victory by one point, which we had done in six games that season. Critics thought a team that could only squeak out so many victories by one point was bound to lose their composure in the play-offs. Throughout the season we had worked towards becoming the team we now were. We were proud of how far we had gotten. The only thing left to do was to play our hardest and to see how well we matched up against the best team in the state. All of this led up to the moment of the State Championship Game. From the locker room, we walked into the dark tunnel leading to the nervous light of The M... ...at is he didnââ¬â¢t like how he wrote about things he didnââ¬â¢t know about, when he could have been writing about important things that were happening to him because he did know about them. This makes me see the importance of my paper better. I also changed some things around in the paper. As you can imagine, when Dr. Morgan criticized writing about ââ¬Å"The Big Gameâ⬠I was like, ââ¬Å"Oh Crap, now I have to write it all over again.â⬠As you can see, I decided to stay with my original idea, but just focus on it at a different point. Instead of telling what happened, I focus more on why it affected me. Like when I wrote, â⬠Because of what I learned that moment, I will be able to see when teamwork is needed and how to pursue it. You might not think that this is such an important quality, but this connects with me every day of my life.â⬠I think this helps fit the assignment better.
